Thursday, 26 February 2009

cricketEd Balls, the Secretary of State for the Department of Children, Schools and Families, has set an exciting challenge to all maintained schools. The challenge comprises of two competitions and schools can enter either one or both:

  1. The most innovative and imaginative programme to expand the reach of cricket in schools and clubs. This could be focused on: engaging specific target groups in cricket (e.g. girls); small sided or indoor games or using young leaders as officials, umpires, scorers etc
  2. The most innovative and imaginative programme to use cricket to raise standards in other areas of the curriculum. This could be in english, geography, languages, maths, science or technology.

The examples for both competitions are not meant to be restrictive and you are encouraged to be as imaginative as you like.

How to enter

Any school or group of schools can enter. There is no set application form, so please submit your ideas via email to: frances.brown@youthsporttrust.org by Friday 8 May. Entries should be no more than four sides of A4 at the very most and must include: an outline of the idea, how it is being/will be developed and implemented and how its success will be measured.

The winning schools

The entries will be judged by a panel of experts from the ECB, DCSF, DCMS and the Youth Sport Trust. The winning schools will be informed by email on or around Wednesday 20 May 2009. The decisions of the judging panel will be final.

The prizes

For each competition, the English Cricket Board is providing an afternoon at Lords for a party of 15 – enough for a whole cricket team and a few school staff to see one of the Twenty20 World Cup games. This is likely to be on Sunday 14 June. Winning Schools need to arrange their own transport to and from London.

It promises to be a great afternoon, with refreshments laid on, a tour of the Lords Museum and the possibility of meeting some of our cricketing heroes!

Closing date for entries is 8 May 2009.
