24 children recently took part in a Multi-skills Festival hosted by Portsmouth University students at the Admiral Lord Nelson School in Portsmouth. The students were promoting the ABC’S (Agility, Balance, Co-ordination and Speed) – important skills to be learnt in order to play many different sports.
The children from Copnor Junior and Westover Primary moved around the skill stations and were scored accordingly. Many of them enjoyed the relay race where the competition between the two schools really shone through!
At the end, all the children received a certificate and goody bag for participating in the event, along with a presentation ceremony to award the certificates for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. All the children really enjoyed themselves and learnt lots of new skills and ways to improve and practice those skills.
Multi-skill Festivals should form an integral part of the schools competition framework at key stages 1 and 2 within each School Sport Partnership.
The activities delivered at a Multi-skill Festival are intended to develop the fundamental movement skills of balance, coordination and agility. Festivals provide an opportunity to implement the principles of a high quality competition for young people and can also be used to initiate assessment of ability. Individual activities could be set up each day for young people to challenge themselves and to practice, and can be delivered in Multi-skill Clubs.
Multi-skill Festival resources which include sets of twelve activity station cards for key stages 1 and 2 have been developed by the Youth Sport Trust, to provide ideas and guidance on running a local festival. These resources will be distributed to all School Sport Partnerships in conjunction with National School Sport Week 2008.
