Dreams + Teams celebrates International Education Week

13th November 2007

Dreams + TeamsWith last week’s announcement that the Commonwealth Games will be held in Glasgow in 2014, adding to the London Olympics in 2012 and potential Rugby and Football World Cups on these shores in the same decade - now has never been a better time for young people to learn about other cultures.

The Youth Sport Trust’s Dreams + Teams programme, run in conjunction with the British Council, develops mutual understanding between countries around the use of sport in helping to develop education. It also develops leadership skills and cross-cultural awareness in 14 to 18 year olds through sport and international educational links.

Today at the Banks’s Stadium, home to Walsall Football Club, 125 teachers – all from existing Dreams + Teams schools – have come together to share experiences and recognise each others successes in achieving international links and collective working. The development day also provides schools with the opportunity to network and establish relationships with schools involved with the same country or language.

This morning Young Leaders from Holden Lane Sports College, Staffordshire, shared their experiences of visiting Jamhuri High School in Nairobi, Kenya and spoke of eagerly anticipating the Kenyan students return visit to Holden Lane in early December.

Dreams + Teams explores issues such as fair play, equity, cultural diversity, inclusion, religion, ethics and global communication and culminates in an annual festival offering young people the unique opportunity to showcase their work together.

International Education Week, 12-16 November, is an excellent opportunity to show how being internationally minded has benefited your school or college. Why not shout about your achievements?
