Overview
Academies are all-ability state schools with a mission to transform education. They are set up where the local status quo in secondary education is in need or improvement, or where there is a demand for new school places. They are established and managed by independent sponsors, and funded by the government at a similar level to other local schools. Some Academies are brand new schools in areas needing extra school places. Others replace weak or under-performing schools.
An increasing number of Sports Colleges are becoming Academies and some schools are taking on a sports-related specialism for the first time as an Academy. These Academies are located in all areas of England. The Youth Sport Trust has a remit from the DCSF to support Academies in the use of the sports-related specialism. Support and guidance is provided for Academies during their development and also once they are open. This network continues to grow, with new and established Academies developing and celebrating improved student performance and progress.
